LAGOS, NIGERIA — Former Chief of Army Staff and ex-Ambassador to Benin, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (Rtd), has spotlighted Lagos State’s pivotal role in Nigeria’s national security and defense. Speaking at the Lagos State University of Education’s Security Summit on November 20, 2024, Buratai emphasized the city’s economic significance and strategic importance in his keynote address, titled “Lagos in Nigeria’s National Security and Defence Architecture: An Analysis.”
He revealed that Lagos accounts for 26.7% of Nigeria’s GDP and over 50% of the non-oil GDP, describing the city as Nigeria’s economic powerhouse. Its strategic Atlantic coastline not only bolsters maritime trade and defense but also presents vulnerabilities to external threats, he noted.
Highlighting security challenges, including urban crime, terrorism, and illegal migration, Buratai proposed the establishment of a waterfront authority, the creation of a Nigerian Navy Marine Corps, and an increase in troop levels to 800,000. He praised Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s innovative security strategies and commended Lagos’ infrastructural advancements, including the Red and Blue Rail Lines.
The summit, hosted by Vice-Chancellor Prof. B.B. Lafiaji-Okuneye, brought together traditional rulers, dignitaries, security experts, and students. Commissioner Barr Tolani Sule presented Buratai with a Plaque of Honour, lauding his nation-building efforts.
This landmark event underscored Lagos’ indispensable role in safeguarding Nigeria’s economic and security frameworks.
