On Sunday, November 3, 2024, the First Lady of The Gambia, Mrs. Fatoumata Bah-Barrow, visited Tukur and Tukur Farms. There, she praised Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai, former Nigerian Chief of Army Staff and Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, for his dedication to advancing agricultural self-sufficiency in Africa. Mrs. Bah-Barrow commended Gen Buratai’s transformative farming model, which integrates livestock, dairy, and crop cultivation to promote food security and sustainable development.
“What I witnessed today is a testament to dedication and vision,” Mrs. Bah-Barrow remarked. “At first, I saw the General as solely a military leader, but today, I see him as a champion for all humanity.” She highlighted how his approach reflects a deep commitment to community empowerment and sustainable living, inspiring aspirations for a hunger-free Africa. Mrs. Bah-Barrow suggested implementing similar initiatives in The Gambia as a pilot project, citing the country’s manageable size and population as ideal for demonstrating the impact of self-sustaining agricultural practices. She extended an invitation to Gen Buratai to deliver a lecture on practical agricultural techniques, with a particular focus on applications within military settings.
Gen Buratai, who holds the traditional titles of Betara of Biu and Garkuwan Keffi, reflected on his long-standing passion for agriculture, which he began as a young officer with the rank of Major. This commitment matured over his military career, culminating in the establishment of Nigerian Army Farms and Ranches, which has since become a key contributor to Nigeria’s GDP and an example of impactful, post-service contributions to society.
The visit included a tour of Tukur and Tukur Farms’ diverse facilities, showcasing a variety of projects, including poultry, greenhouses, snake enclosures, and production lines for bottled water, baked goods, and the widely popular Arwasky yogurt. Mrs. Bah-Barrow was joined by senior Gambian officials, including Deputy Head of Mission Abdoulie Hydara, Deputy Permanent Secretary Anna Jobe, and First Secretary Mr. Babucarr Dubumya.
