South East National Assembly Caucus Urges Action Against Hate Speech

In a strong stance against hate speech, the Southeast East members of the National Assembly have petitioned Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to arrest and prosecute individuals inciting anti-Igbo sentiments in the South West.

The petition, led by South East Senate Caucus leader Enyinnaya Abaribe and House of Representatives leader Igariwey Enwo, highlights a provocative post on X account @Lagospedia calling for an #IgboMustGo protest from August 20-30. Despite the deactivation of the account on August 3, similar vitriol persists across social media.

The account was reportedly being manned by one Olamide Ifeoluwa Bolaji who is notoriously known for promoting hate speeches online and instigating tribal wars just like Simon Ekpa.

However, since the individual remains in Nigeria, it is relatively straightforward for security agencies to apprehend him and his associates before the situation escalates to something akin to Simon Ekpa, especially given the recent polarization of Nigeria’s political climate.

The lawmakers emphasized that while the protest call was made by a Yoruba individual, South East leaders have urged peace, noting minimal unrest. They called on government bodies to ensure the protection of every citizen’s rights and foster national unity. The lawmakers stress the need for government action to uphold the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention Etc) Act 2015 and ensure national unity and safety.
