Hon Benjamin Kalu Extends Gratitude to President Tinubu for Signing South-East Development Commission Bill into Law
In a heartfelt statement, Rep. Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives, expressed his deep appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) Bill into law yesterday.
On behalf of the South-East geopolitical zone of Nigeria, Kalu praised President Tinubu for this historic legislative victory. The newly established commission, funded from the Federation Account, will spearhead the reconstruction and rehabilitation of roads, houses, and other infrastructure damaged during the civil war. It will also address ecological and developmental challenges across the South-East States: Abia, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, and Ebonyi.
Kalu emphasized that this bill marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s journey towards complete reconciliation, rehabilitation, and reconstruction. Reflecting on Nigeria’s post-civil war recovery, he noted that while reconciliation and rehabilitation have been achieved, the SEDC signifies the start of full reconstruction for the South-East.
He also conveyed the gratitude of the Ndi Igbo (Igbo people), expressing optimism and determination for the future. Kalu assured that the commission would work diligently to fulfill the dreams and aspirations of the people while continuing to advocate for further positive development in the region.
In his statement, Kalu addressed the current economic challenges, calling for patience and trust in the ongoing reforms. He highlighted the government’s efforts to address inflation, stabilize the economy, and create job opportunities through industrialization and the work of organizations like the SEDC.
Kalu also introduced the Peace in South East Project (PISE-P), a non-governmental initiative aimed at addressing insecurity in the region through non-kinetic measures.
Concluding his statement, Kalu urged Nigerians to unite and focus on collective efforts to build a prosperous nation where opportunities are accessible to all. He expressed confidence in the country’s ability to overcome challenges and improve the lives of its citizens.
“Let us remember that our strength lies in our unity, in our shared dreams, and in our collective efforts. Together, we can build a Nigeria that offers every child a decent shot at life and keeps the doors of opportunity open for all. We know we can do better. And we will.”
Thank you, and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
