Breaking News: Okonkwo, Veteran Nollywood Actor and Lawyer, Parts Ways with Peter Obi
In a statement posted on his X account on Saturday, July 27, 2024, Okonkwo, a lawyer and veteran Nollywood actor, announced his decision to part ways with Peter Obi. The actor cited the former Anambra State Governor’s inability to resolve ongoing crises within the Labour Party as the primary reason for his departure.
Okonkwo expressed his disappointment, stating that he has lost confidence in Obi’s capability to restore unity within the party and lead it to victory in the next general elections. He outlined the various challenges that have plagued the Labour Party since the conclusion of the 2023 elections and criticized Obi for failing to use his influence to bring about a resolution.
“After the 2023 general election, Nigerians, including me, had high hopes for the Labour Party. I believed that Peter Obi would seize the momentum and build a solid party of integrity that would have the strong base needed to overthrow these kakistocrats and kleptocrats. He just needed to give the right directives, and everyone would fall in line,” Okonkwo stated.
The actor further revealed his shock when Obi publicly declared that his primary promise was not to build a strong Labour Party but to solve Nigeria’s problems. Okonkwo questioned Obi’s awareness of the importance of a solid party base for political success. Despite his initial defense of Obi, Okonkwo noted that the former governor’s efforts to privately address the Labour Party’s issues have been futile.
Okonkwo also criticized Obi for failing to support the Labour Unions who founded the party to fight for workers’ welfare. He mentioned that some union members now view Obi as part of the problem. Okonkwo expressed his frustration with the lack of clear leadership and direction from Obi, leaving party members confused about the future of the Labour Party.
“I cannot continue to speak on behalf of a leader whose stance on important issues I do not know. I am shocked that PO could not openly support the noble efforts of the Labour Unions to the extent that some of them are openly saying that PO is now the problem of LP,” he added.
Concluding his statement, Okonkwo declared his intention to continue his political journey without Peter Obi, emphasizing his loyalty to leaders he can trust and believe in. “I have decided to continue my political journey into the great Nigeria of our vision without Peter Obi,” Okonkwo stated.
This announcement marks a significant development in the ongoing turmoil within the Labour Party, highlighting the deepening divisions and challenges facing the party as it prepares for future elections.
