2nd Northeast Zonal Conference of the Historical Society of Nigeria (HSN): Buratai Highlights Borno’s Contemporary History

Biu, July 3, 2024 – The 2nd Northeast Zonal Conference of the Historical Society of Nigeria (HSN) concluded today, marking a significant event in historical discourse and academic collaboration. Held at the Tukur Buratai Institute for War and Peace, Nigerian Army University Biu (NAUB), the conference ran from July 1 to 3, 2024.

The conference, a joint effort between NAUB and HSN’s Northeast zone, brought together leading scholars and students to explore contemporary historical issues.

Keynote Address by Lt Gen Tukur Yusufu Buratai (rtd)

One of the highlights was the keynote address delivered by Lt Gen Tukur Yusufu Buratai (rtd), former Chief of Army Staff, and current Benin Republic Ambassador. His presentation, titled “Borno in Contemporary History and the Role of Tukur Buratai Institute for War and Peace,” provided an in-depth analysis of Borno State’s historical evolution, the insurgency challenges faced, and the strides made in combating terrorism.

Buratai emphasized the pivotal role of the Tukur Buratai Institute in preserving historical artifacts and documenting efforts in the fight against insurgency. He noted that understanding the region’s history and the successes in counter-terrorism efforts are crucial for continued peace and development.

Scholarly Contributions and Student Induction

The conference featured insightful lead paper presentations by esteemed academics, including Professor Talla Ngarka and Professor Samuel O Aghalino, President of the HSN. Their papers addressed various aspects of the region’s history and contemporary challenges, contributing to a richer understanding of Northeast Nigeria’s socio-political landscape.

In a landmark event, the conference also hosted the first student induction ceremony in the Northeast, where final-year History students from NAUB were formally inducted into the HSN. This ceremony signifies a new chapter for these students, integrating them into a broader community of historians dedicated to advancing historical knowledge and research.

Awards and Recognition

Distinguished figures were honored for their contributions to historical scholarship and national service. Lt Gen Tukur Yusufu Buratai (rtd), Vice Chancellor Prof Kyari Mohammed, HSN President Prof Samuel O Aghalino, Prof Talla Ngarka, Brig Gen A DadanGarba (rtd), and Brig Gen HY Abdulhamid received awards of excellence, recognizing their dedication and achievements.

Facility Tour and Conclusion

The conference concluded with a tour of the Tukur Buratai Institute’s museum, offering attendees a closer look at the institute’s efforts in curating and preserving historical materials related to the region’s fight against insurgency. The museum tour highlighted artifacts and documentation pivotal to understanding the historical and contemporary struggles of Borno State and the Northeast region.
